Bleaching... or not

I'm doing the teeth bleaching thing. It's something I've wanted to do for awhile. The price was right at my dentist's office and so I jumped at the chance. I gagged when they were taking the impression of my teeth. I about gave up then. I got the bleaching trays yesterday and once again I was reminded that my gag reflex is strong. So, this morning I tried the self-portrait to get a before/after picture of my teeth. No such luck, or at least I don't plan to post the pictures here. All for looking good? At least I got through the first 30 minutes with the trays last night. As long as I don't try to talk with the things in my mouth I might actually get to do this. In the mean time, don't call late in the evening. I probably won't answer.

  1. I hope you get the results you want. I don't think I'll ever do bleaching. Unless there is some purpose to my dental health that I haven't heard about? I honestly wonder if the treatment would weaken the enamel or the tooth in some other way, or irritate the gums, or... Since I haven't figured out any health benefit, I just can't see myself dealing wtih that. Plus, you made it sound so fun. ;) What are the benefits of bleaching other than whiter teeth that appeals to you?

  2. Whiter teeth is what I wanted, and I'm pleased with the results. But my gums are irritated too. No dental benefit. It's also made me contemplate the word "vanity" ...

  3. Did the dentist tell you if it could increase the chances of gingivitis or anything? I guess I hate the dentist so much that even if it's solely for dental health I have a hard time. Combine that with my tendency toward cynicism, and I worry about unintended consequences. Do you have to keep doing it to keep the white teeth? I think it's just something along the lines of coloring your hair. I never have. I know people who never have but then they start greying and then they start to color their hair. Maybe it's like that with teeth, too. For me, I'm content with "neat and comely," but we al have different thresholds.

  4. I think I'll have to do it about every 6 months to keep them white. I hope that the bleach from the dentist isn't as damaging as some other ways might be. As much pain as my teeth have given me lately, it's nice to look at them and like my smile again.
